From quality to sustainability -Our mission statement and values

In our factory in Effingham, Illinois, we work according to the same values passed down over five generations from the time John Boos first made the original butcher block. Though a lot has changed since 1887, our tradition of quality, pride in workmanship, and devotion to innovation not only define the culture of the company still today but are crafted into every Boos Block® product.

Our respect for wood and commitment to sustainably harvest and manufacture the finest quality and functional cutting surfaces are core in our mission to inspire professional and home chefs in food preparation and be a touchstone at the heart of cooking and the enjoyment of food.

Highest Quality for Every Cut, Every Kitchen

From the very beginning, one thing was clear: to make the best quality product of durability and function for our customers' cutting needs. Whether it's a hardwood butcher block, work table, kitchen island or cutting board, only the highest QUALITY is our standard. This begins with the selection and seasoning of materials and continues through our processes to ongoing customer service.

Durable Functionality

We have always worked with the requirements of our customers in mind. So, in addition to quality and design, we pay special attention to FUNCTIONALITY of the product. Whether it is the selection, preparation, and shaping of each piece of hardwood, the double-sided usability of our cutting boards, or using a deep sloping juice groove or even rounded corners and ergonomic handles or grips – every detail is thought through and reflects generations of commitment to our customers. We work hard to make everyday kitchen life more efficient, enjoyable, safe and productive for our customers.

Food Safety and Hygiene

Our aim, among other things, is to ensure the highest level of FOOD SAFETY and HYGIENE when preparing food. We've made hardwood cutting surfaces for professionals for over 135 years so we understand what it takes to source premium sustainable material and craft it into professional quality and safe products. Certification of our products by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) also attests that our products undergo rigorous testing, inspections and validation measures to ensure that we meet the strict food safety and sanitation standards of the U.S. food service industry, and are delivering only the highest quality products to our customers.

Green and We Care!

SUSTAINABILITY is a top priority for the company. We are committed to the preservation and protection of our environment as well as the enrichment of our communities. As an integral part of our business practice, we take every step to ensure we follow environmentally responsible and sustainable manufacturing processes. We’re also a long-standing member of the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA). As such, we’re required to practice sustainable forestry and sound forest management. Our hardwood products are recognized as sustainable and renewable products for eco-effective design.

Responsible Leadership

As a leading and oldest manufacturer of its kind in the USA, John Boos & Co. has a RESPONSIBILITY TO LEAD in quality, food safety, and environmental stewardship. We work closely with stakeholders on all levels (forestry management (NHLA), food sanitation and safety (NSF), culinary professionals, etc.) to ensure sustainability, quality and safety standards. In doing so, we help keeping our planet beautiful, vibrant and resourceful so that generations of chefs have the opportunity to prep on hardwood cutting and food prep surfaces. It is part of our mission and contribution to a better culinary world.

Traditional Values, New Ways

Since Conrad Boos made the very first blocks in 1887, technology has brought great advances in precision engineering and manufacturing – from receipt of the premium hardwoods at the factory to the shipping of the finished product. Progressive kilns dry and cure every piece of hardwood, and programmable manufacturing equipment has enabled us to improve and guarantee product quality and safety with more functional and flexible designs – designs that Conrad Boos could only dream of in 1887. Though a lot has changed, our TRADITION, pride in workmanship and commitment to sustainability and quality is crafted into every Boos Blocks® product. These values are as important today as when we started in Effingham, Illinois over 135 years ago.
